Charles Town

Charles Town is the county seat of Jefferson County. It was founded in 1786 and named for Charles Washington, brother of George Washington. The Jefferson County Courthouse, which is at the intersection of George and Washington Streets, was the scene of two treason trials, John Brown in 1859 and the Miner's Trial in 1922. One of the pluses of living in Charles Town is the downtown section with unique shops and restaurants. For those who enjoy community theater, the Old Opera House offers plays throughout the year. The tree-lined streets of the residential sections offer an excellent selection of charming older homes. The Jefferson Memorial Park on the south end of town offers a swimming pool, playground, tennis courts, picnic tables and walking/jogging trails.
